Gate Valves are primarily designed to start or stop flow, and when straight-line fluid flow and minimum flow restriction are required. In service, these valves are generally fully open or fully closed. The Gate valve disc is completely removed when the valve is fully open; the disc is fully pulled into the valve bonnet. This leaves an opening for flow through the valve at the same inner diameter as the piping system in which the valve is installed.
