In almost all fields of process and plant engineering liquids or gases are used, e.g. for coolant and lubricant supply of plants and power units or ventilation of installations and buildings. Electronic flow sensors are used to prevent damage or downtime caused by flow interruptions. Ifm's product range comprises flow sensors with different measuring principles for monitoring the most varied types of media, including water, oils and coolants, but also air, compressed air or aggressive media. Their application areas range from simple monitoring tasks to precise flow rate measurements. The SM type flow meter operates according to Faraday's law of induction. The conductive medium flowing through a pipe in a magnetic field (M) generates a voltage which is proportional to the flow velocity (v) or volumetric flow quantity. This voltage is tapped via electrodes (E) and converted in the evaluation unit. Its resistant materials mean the sensor is suitable for a multitude of media. A high protecting rating and a robust, compact housing distinguish the sensor in the field. The measuring principle is suitable for liquids with an electrical conductivity of min. 20 µS/cm. Typical values for the electrical conductivity are 0.5 µS/cm for distilled water, 50 µS/cm for drinking water and 50,000 µS/cm for salt water.
